
LAURA E. BERGUS
Laura's practice focuses on civil litigation, contracts and contract disputes, business formation, real estate transactions, family law, estate planning, probate, and all types of appeals within the state of Iowa. She is also a mediator and collaborative practitioner in family law matters.
Laura is a life-long Iowa City resident. She received a B.A. from the University of Iowa with special honors and highest distinction and a J.D. with highest distinction from the University of Iowa College of Law. She is a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society and Order of the Coif.
Before attending law school, Laura was telecommunications director for the City of North Liberty, Iowa. She also worked during law school on communications and technology issues for a variety of legal organizations.
Laura serves on the Iowa City city council, at-large. She also volunteers her time in the community. She is a member of the Iowa City Regional Advisory Council for Iowa Legal Aid. Laura has served on the board of directors for the Community Foundation of Johnson County, Iowa City Area Development, the UNESCO City of Literature, and FilmScene. Laura is an active member of Iowa City's South District Neighborhood Association. She received the Corridor Business Journal's 40 Under 40 award in 2015.
Laura is licensed to practice in state courts in Iowa. She is a member of the Dean Mason Ladd Inn of Court, the Iowa Organization of Women Attorneys, Collaborative Lawyers of Eastern Iowa, and the Johnson County and Iowa Bar Associations. Laura has been repeatedly recognized by the Iowa Supreme Court for her pro bono service.
Laura's notable cases include: Ziskovsky v. Ziskovsky, 843 N.W.2d 478, No. 13-0360, 2014 WL 69620 (Iowa Ct. App. 2014), Oehl v. Amana Colonies Land Use District Board of Trustees, 847 N.W.2d 237, No. 13-0328, 2014 WL 1234216 (Iowa Ct. App. 2014).
